A Victorian Christmas

Allie from Broadgreen House talked to us about what a Victorian Christmas was like.

Polishing a silver teaspoon may have been one of the jobs to do in your Christmas stocking.

We played a parlour game with string and a ring.

Ajay has to work out who has the ring after it has been passed round the circle.

We have been studying all about the ocean this term. At the end everyone researched about one thing that lives in the ocean and had to persuade us as to whether the world needs more of these things. We shared our findings with other classes and whanau members. Ideas Expo on PhotoPeach

Mask Parade Writing

The Mask Parade
On Friday the 16th of October there was a mask parade. There were over 2000 people there. We had to wait an hour before we got marching. When we were going I had butterflies in my tummy. The truffula trees were hitting my mask but instead it hit Emma’s and it made a rip. All the way I was feeling happy because my family was there. Pam was losing the actions as she looked at the person next to her. I got tired but I ignored it. Alyssa was stopping so the truffula trees would to in front of her then I said “Alyssa” to remind her. Then I stopped so Alyssa could get to me. We walked up to the humming fish and Alyssa got sick of singing “let it grow, let it grow her eat Nayland we all know”. When our parents picked us up people were tired.  Zoe Keene

The Mask Parade Disaster
When we got to the mask parade, we all had to sit down. It was a long time before we started marching but that was okay. While I was waiting, the Truffula trees were whacking me on my head. Soon we were walking. “Ow, ow, ow”. Something was hurting my nose and it was the mask. I got so distracted about it that I walked into the swammy swan line. I was so angry. Soon I was back with the humming fish. I decided I should get to the back of my class but then this happened. “Ahhhh”. I smelt butterfly milk, you guessed it, I was with the Truffula trees, what a disaster. I walked back to my class and saw my mum so I waved. I thought maybe if I stayed in the middle of the class I wouldn’t go into another class. And guess what, it worked. I saw lots of funny things. Soon it was over. I sat down and waited for mum. I realized that what happened today was kind of fun. I can’t wait for the next mask parade disaster. Ollie Gabites

Mask Parade

On Friday I was bored, tired and grumpy. But I had to go to the mask parade. I laughed really hard because Jeremy was wearing a tutu. I was nearly deafened because the music was so loud. My feet ached for 2.5 hours from walking down the street. I didn’t see my mum at the start. In the middle I saw them. At the end my feet were aching. I asked mum if it was time to go. But it was not. Mum had to sign me and Josh out. It took for hours then it was time to go. I was the first one there when my mum said we were having takeaways night. I love parades. But not when I’m in it.  Brianna
THE AWESOME MASK PARADE

“Yay” I said!  “It is the mask parade”, as I biked home!
I was so excited.  The mask parade was tomorrow night.  When I got home I told my mother that our masks were really cool and our character was the humming fish.  Our whole school was doing the Lorax for the mask parade.

I told my mum that room 10 and room 12 were the babaloot bears and room 11 was the ducks.
Finally the day came and it was the 16th October so my dad took me to the Montgomery car park, the place I have to go.  When I go there, I waited for 1hours.  I didn’t know it started at 5.30.  I went there at 4.27.

Finally we walked some steps and when we were walking my legs were aching.  I was thirsty and I was really hungry.  I was as hungry as a lion.  That I could eat 8 pieces of toast.  I think.

Do you know that we were not in a line?  We were all scrunched up.  Me, Victoria and Zak passed lots of people because we were at the side of the road.  Lots of people were at the middle so we passed them.  When I was still in the middle I heard the drums at the back it was so loud that my ears were going to pop.

Jeremy was carrying a big speaker and it kept on saying let it grow let it grow here at Nayland we all know…..it was so loud it was louder that the drums at the back.  When I was there I saw lots of creative masks surrounding me.

Finally we walked back to where we were at the start.  Then we sat down on the concrete ground.  Finally my dad picked me up and we went to the aquatic centre because my mum and my annoying sister were there swimming.  After that we went back home.
I can’t wait till the next mask parade. By Hao-Ren

THE MASK PARADE
“Mum.  I don’t want to go to the mask parade!” I mumbled.  “You are going to the mask parade and why don’t you want to go”? My mum argued.  “It’s too long to walk though,”  I mumbled again.

Now it was another long trip into town and I was trapped in the car.  The traffic was too slow so we took another way but we all had to wait so long I wished we took the way with the traffic.

When we started the parade my legs were already tired of standing.  We had to wait a lot of time.  Probably even an hour!  Doesn’t matter how much time it took to start.   At least we did start.  Also because of the drums when the speaker was in with swannie swans it was hard to hear the music.  I had to go to the front line of the humming fishes to hear properly.
When I thought we were still near the start we were all nearly at eh end.  Close to the end the truffula trees kept banging our tails and trying to pass us.  Some of the swannie swans were slowing down and becoming part of the humming fish.  It was annoying to keep telling the truffula trees and swannie swans to keep up and slow down to get back with their classes.  Its way like the truffula trees were trying to stop us from going to the left side of the road!  That was very funny but annoying.

At the end my sister was the first to see me but she had lost mum.  I was the first to spot her again.  My legs were still sore when we saw the car but I ran anyway.  By Lexi

The Amazing Masked Parade
“Dad, I don’t want to go to the masked parade. It’s too long” I mumbled. “It will be worth it” he said in a nice warm voice. “Ok” I said. So we went. When we got there it was crowded, it took 10-15 minutes to find number C11. When we got there at number C11 we waited for Pam to get our costumes. We waited for an hour or so before it was our turn to walk on the road.
When we were walking down the road I saw heaps of people crowding around as they cheered “go Nayland Primary, woo”. “Yum, I could smell the sweet smell of dried apples on a stock. Finally, after 20 minutes of walking and singing it was finished for us, so I asked my dad if we could go to the carnival. He said yes, so we went.
When we got there at the carnival I saw a mechanical bull and it was free to ride on it. So I lined up at the line. When it was my turn to go on the mechanical bull, I got on and the man put my hand in the right place. I looked like a cowboy but I only lasted for 2.75 seconds. When that was over me and my dad were exhausted so after a long day me and my dad went home.  by Lily

The Amazing Mask Paradeby Lucy

As my mum and I walked to the mask parade everyone looked so excited, I couldn’t wait to start walking. Once we got to Pam I put on my mask, poncho and belt, I felt amazing. I went to sit in my line. After an hour of waiting we started walking, I was so excited. When we started walking the swannie swans and humming fish merged together. I felt like a celebrity because of all the pictures that were being taken. When we were walking the Truffula trees were banging us on the head with their trees. My mum also participated in the parade, she was a Lorax. She had to keep coming ad giving us lollies, I felt very hungry. After the mask parade we went to the Verdict for my dad’s birthday. There was even a fish that was floating upside down. He was about to die because he got an air bubble in his stomach. Other than that the mask parade and my dad’s birthday was awesome!!!!

The Big Practice – by Cory
After lunch we quickly did the roll then got into our costumes for our practice of the mask parade. We were the humming fish. We speeded out of the class to get into our rows of eight on the back field. As we started marching and singing my mask was digging into my nose, ouch! Our lines got muddled up and I kept bumping into everyone. The music was so loud I got deafened. We walked round and round in circles. We also had an audience, the teachers and the old people at the rest home, but there was one problem we weren’t singing loud enough so Mr Sawyer told us to sing louder!!! It worked.

Masked Parade
On Friday 16th October it was the masked parade.
It was an hours wait before we got moving. I was bored waiting to get moving. Luckily I found something to do while I was waiting, and it was talking to Bao-tram.
Finally we got moving. As Nayland School walked out of the car park the Truffula trees kept hitting me on the head. When we were on the road I saw my friends mum and brother. Then when walked a little further I saw my mum cheering and calling out “Mia!” so I waved to mum. When we got around the corner lots of masks blew away. After going past another corner another lot of masks blew off.
Finally, we were back where we started. Then mum came to pick me up and take me to have pizza, which was Montgomery Carpark. We didn’t go on any of the rides because mum didn’t have enough money for dinner and rides.
A few days after the parade I heard that Nayland won the supreme award which means we were the best school out of all the schools that competed in the parade. Then I saw Nayland In the paper, but not me.  By Mia Harnetty

The Masked Parade
BANG BANG BANG! The drummers behind room 7 were playing heaps of music when we were starting to line up in our lines.
“Let it grow, Let it grow”, everyone sang when we started to move. “Finally” I shouted out loud. We got on the road and started the music again. When we started marching we kept on stopping and stopping. So we stopped the music.
We all walked heaps but we all went out of line. I always walked in with the Swannie Swans. I stopped and waited for the humming first to catch up with me. It looked a bit weird with the humming fish in the Swannie Swans section.
Room Seven caught up with the judges so they could judge us. The Mayor is coming to Nayland Primary on Friday to present the overall prize.
There was a carnival that we walked past. I wanted to go so badly but I couldn’t because I was in the parade. My friend, Zoe, went to the carnival after the parade.
Finally it was over but I’m still doing it next year.   By Sophie Haynes

Mask Paradeby Zahrlis

At the mask parade we were walking around. I heard people clapping and cheering, also taking photos. We were singing let it grow. I heard the drums going bang. We were in lines but we got out of line. The truffella trees were hitting us with crepe paper. Some of the truffella trees went in front of me and I got tires. My legs got tired too. I was nervous and my arms got really tired when I was doing the actions. I had pizza for dinner and I had fun at the mask parade, it took a couple of hours until the parade finished. I t was windy and it was hard to see out of the mask. I was surrounded by masks. Some of my class bumped me and hit me with the fin of the mask.

When I got to the Mask Parade it was colossal with people .  It took about 5 minutes to find my class, room 7.  I put my mask on and my costume.  While I put my costume on I heard the big drums going bang bang bang, I could feel it in my heart.  When we started to march we sang "let it grow, let it grow, here at Nayland we all know". We did actions with it, which made me very tired.  I heard the crowd cheer as we went past.  When I was marching, me and my friends kept getting muddled up with the Swannie Swans.  My friend Lucy told me to move back a notch.  When we were marching my mask kept pushing on my nose.  When I took it off, I had a mark on my nose.

Yesterday I marched in the Mask Parade.  Me and my class were Humming Fish.   We sang a song called Let It Grow.  It was hard to see through my mask.  The Truffula Trees kept on over taking us and because of this, we went forward and bumped into the Swannie Swans then sent them tumbling forward, and they bumped the next group like dominos!  There was a gust of wind and it carried the masks towards my class.  We each caught one and gave them back.  The crowd was gasping.  Everyone got back into line.

Mask Parade

I was simply waiting then this drumming noise started, my heart was pounding.  This was the moment.  We started to sing and march.  I saw my mum then I kept marching.  The truffula trees started to pass us and the swammie swans became our group.  I kept getting hit by the wheelbarrow. The crowd was taking photos. From all the photos I felt like a celebrity. I just about got blinded from the flashes.  After the parade I got a little bit bored so Ajay, Ollie and I played fishy got eaten by a kitty cat.  I went home sore from the marching and singing. by Zak
